Analog TV signals are being switched off around Australia, region by region, between 2010 and 2013. After this date, all areas of Australia will receive digital TV signals only.
To keep receiving free-to-air TV after the analog signals are switched off in your area, you’ll need a television capable of receiving digital signals.
To make getting ready easier, we've outlined some of the key considerations involved in becoming digital ready. More information on each consideration is available by following the links at the bottom of this page.
Upgrading your equipment to become digital ready
- To upgrade your equipment for digital TV you can buy a digital TV, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to. Virtually all current analog TVs will be able to receive digital TV by adding a set-top box or digital TV recorder.
- Before upgrading, check the equipment you are purchasing has a High Definition digital receiver so it can receive all digital channels available in your area.
- If you decide to replace some of your analog equipment, environmentally friendly options exist to help you recycle your old TV or equipment.
Antennas, reception and cabling
- Having the right TV equipment is usually enough to get ready for digital TV. In some cases, you may need to check your antenna, cabling and connectors to help improve your digital TV reception.
- There is no such thing as a digital antenna, but there are some things that can be done to improve your reception. To help you, the Australian Government has developed the Antenna Installer Endorsement Scheme. Antenna installers endorsed under this Scheme can check your antenna, reception and cabling and help you become digital ready.
- If you live in or own a unit or townhouse, you may be receiving TV reception from a shared antenna system. In some cases your building may require an upgrade or installation of a new shared antenna system. This can take time as all owners need to agree, so it is best to start planning now.
- If you rent your home and need an external antenna or if you live in a flat or apartment with a shared antenna system, you should consult your landlord or owners' corporation if any changes are needed to your antenna set-up.
